I see a lot of talk about Amps but almost nothing about 14S battery.
I built a mid drive E-bike, and so far I'm running it on 10S, but I'm interested in running it on 13S.
Has anyone been consistently running VESC with 14S or 13S 18650 Li-Ion battery without re-gen?
What is the max voltage without re-gen that is OK to use with VESC 4.7?

Hi Ecyclist,

I love your work, very nice indeed :!:

Unfortunately, the VESC 4.12 and 6 are limited by the DRV830X whose absolute maximum voltage is 60V.

For safety reasons, if you use regen, you are more limited, and 13S is the maximum without risk.

But several guys have developped their own version up to 150kW, but with high voltage HW.

Have a Nice Day.

Thierry

I fear 13s is already quite risky.
12s is safe provided you have good capacitors near the VESC.
@ThierryGTLTS: did you use a VESC with regen at 13s, or know someone who did that for long times ?

3kW.

A stock VESC can handle a 3kW motor, the 2 PCB variants from eBay may handle more, call it 4.5kW tops.

If you find/make a brushless ESC that can handle 6kW for ~$150 then do tell.

The VESC can totally handle larger motors, I've had 4 VESCs driving 6-7kW motors quite happily under the most stressful conditions (robot combat) without exploding. But its a complete waste of a motor, the VESC can only provide 50% of the current they want so it just doesn't have the torque you'd expect from that size of motor.

That is a gorgeous setup. I'd love to see some more of the motor. Are you running sensored?

At this point,I'm running 6374 3200W sensored motor, but I feel that this motor is struggling. So, I figured it would be a good idea to kick it one notch up and use 8072 sensored motor. Both motors came from your neck of the woods. They are Alien Power System motors out of UK. The 8072 is rated at 6000W.
Before I bought the Alien 8072 motor, I had bought another motor. It is the same size and the same copper mass, but is rated at 2700W. I think that most of these motors are overrated and that the other motor, made by Leopard, is close to real rating. The Leopard motor is not sensored, so I'm planning on installing hall sensors in it and change shaft diameter from 12 mm to 10 mm. I could redesign the cycloidal transmission I built to work with 12 mm shaft, but, at this point, changing the shaft will be easier.
Here is the thread of my build, if you're interested:

BTW: Merry Christmas to you all!

Most RC motors are power consumption rated.

Industrial motors are mechanical power rated, and it can be very different :!:

Do you have any facilities to test true mechanical power :?: :!:

I'm really curious to know what real mechanical power I can expect from Alien power motors.

Merry Christmas to all.

Alien Power Systems are just re-branded Maytech motors. Having bought quite a few of the C80100s we've found them of wildly differing quality.

For running our C80100s we've used an MGM 250A ESC and have achieved the rated power. We also achieved about 4 times the rated power when the current limiting on the ESC was opened right out and the motor stalled. The motor did not survive :D

There is a really lack of decent cheap-ish 120A ESCs, and while I am working on this, I'm having more than my fair share of bad luck.
